Google in Ugly Row

Google is in a race row after its search engine asked: "Why are black people so ugly?"

Millions are believed to have seen the offensive prompt after entering the word "why".

Google said it was caused by a feature which predicts what users are about to ask. It said: "Google Suggest provides suggestions based on what other people have searched for previously.

"We have filters to eliminate inappropriate suggestions, but very occasionally an ofensive suggestion may slip through."
